Distractions on the Road to Delphi

"Ever since Reading The Pilgrims Progress by John Buyan i have been inspired to go on a journey – This isnt it" …. This is the blog of a Man 34 living in a city he is learning to love, meeting people he doesn't understand, loving dogs who cant talk back, trying to live a greener life, yearing for 'fireside' moments with someone he's not found and basically just getting on with a life full of fun, anger, fear, love, Kylie and contradiction the best he can – just like everyone else – obviously.

Kiss Me Once – Kylie Minogue – First Listen Review

Kylie Albums are events! It’s just the way it is, we wait, we are teased, we see snippets – Kylie’s Instagram has been practicing album foreplay longer than it took to winch Clare from Steps up on that winch on the last tour. Then finally it arrives to mass hysteria, acclaim and the whimpering of glitter tanned queens bemoaning the lack of Better the devil you know clones.

The best album of Kylie’s career was X ! Shoot me down in condemnation but Aphrodite was bland with the exception of a few stand out tracks like All The Lovers and Closer. Sure X was a mixed bag of sweets but they all pumped their way across the dance floor with thundering beats and a funk that shouted “I Am Back and I am better than glitterball pop”, get past the 3 star reviews and Attitude publishing twaddle bemoaning the failure of Kylie and what you have is an album that still sounds fresh 6 years on and one accompanied by joyously Avant Garde visuals that are effortless compared to the over thought parade that is Gaga’s Artpop. The X tour realised the album in almost perfectly matched energy, the B sides and unreleased tracks from X are better than whats on most albums. So with this in mind how does Kiss Me Once compare?

Well I hesitate to say it is better than X – I generally don’t love anything for at least 6 months – but get back to me in 6 months and I am pretty sure that it will be and equal to it. The vocals right across the album are strong and slightly deeper in tone, the whole album sounds lovely and has an electronic edge that is very on trend. The lead single Into the Blue sets the pace with a pulsing self-help guide to independence that doesn’t involve any fists in the air girl power crap.

“I drew a smile upon my face                                                                                                                                                                                                               I paved the road that would one day leave me lonely”

Its disco with a string quartet and just the right amount of sadness that everyone can privately identify with! The second track Million Miles is possibly the fastest paced Kylie song ever laid down, dancing to this at my age might at some point involve resuscitation but ill give it a go.

I wont go through each song one by one, because quite frankly I’m far too busy throwing shapes around the living room to Les Sex! All the songs on this albums are little epics, they change and evolve with double choruses, funky intros, Daft Punk dance breaks, pace changes and vocoders. Perhaps with the exception of Sexercise which seems a bit like it was added on Kylie’s day off. The album ends with Fine and yes it is Fine – as good as The One. The positivity oozing out of this new confident Kylie is infectious and yet there are enough sparkly G-A-Y moments to please the fans she left behind in the 80’s.

The single Into the Blue is OUT NOW

The Album Kiss Me Now is out on 17th March (before then listen to the stream here)
